As Deputy Department Head of Tokamak Experimental Science, Joseph Snipes manages international collaborations between PPPL and tokamaks around the world as well as with his former colleagues at MIT and with the private fusion company, Commonwealth Fusion Systems. These include collaborations with the ITER Organization where Joseph worked for many years before joining PPPL in 2023. Research areas include Impurity Powder Droppers for wall conditioning, plasma diagnostics, RF physics, Energetic Particle physics, plasma transport and confinement, plasma operations, plasma control, MHD activity and 3D fields, and disruption detection, prediction, avoidance, and mitigation.
