Rich Hawryluk named PPPL’s interim deputy director for operations
Rich Hawryluk, an internationally-known physicist who served as interim director of the U.S. Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) for 10 months until Steve Cowley was named director, has been named by Cowley as interim deputy director for operations and chief operating officer.
Hawryluk will assume the position of Terry Brog, who is stepping down from his position. Brog has been deputy director of operations since June 2016 but spent a year as interim Lab director. He will remain at the Laboratory for the next six months as the head of special assignments and will work on special projects for the Department of Energy and will help develop a technology transfer plan for the Laboratory.
“I am grateful that Rich has agreed to serve as interim deputy director for operations,” Cowley said. “He has been an invaluable resource and I know the Laboratory can rely on his expertise and wisdom until a deputy director for operations can be found. I would also like to thank Terry for his service as deputy director.”
“I am pleased to be able to serve PPPL and will do my best to address some of the challenges ahead until a new deputy director steps in,” Hawryluk said.
This is a familiar role for Hawryluk. He served as deputy director for 11 years from 1997 to 2008. Hawryluk came to PPPL in 1974 after receiving his Ph.D. in physics from MIT. During his 44-year career, he has worked on most of the major fusion experiments at PPPL. He was head of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor, then the largest magnetic confinement facility in the United States, from 1991 to 1997. After leaving his position as deputy director, he headed PPPL’s ITER and Tokamaks Department from 2009 to 2011. From 2011 to 2013, he worked at ITER in France, serving as the deputy director-general for the Administration Department of ITER. After returning to the Laboratory in 2013, Hawryluk headed the ITER and Tokamaks Department for three years. In 2016, he became head of the NSTX-U Recovery Project and headed that effort until becoming interim Laboratory director in September 2017.
Hawryluk has won numerous awards during his career, including a U.S. Department of Energy Distinguished Associate Award, a Kaul Foundation Prize for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research and Technology, a Fusion Power Award, and an American Physical Society Prize for Excellence in Plasma Physics with physicists Rob Gold Goldston and James Strachan. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 2008 and of the American Physical Society since 1986, he also chairs the board of editors of Nuclear Fusion, a monthly journal devoted to controlled fusion energy.
