COLLOQUIUM: EXTERNAL PROPULSION AND THE FUTURE OF SPACE ACCESS
At Escape Dynamics we are working on the next generation propulsion technologies with the goal of developing electromagnetically-powered engines operating at 10x the efficiency of chemical rockets. In this talk I will describe results of Escape Dynamics’ R&D efforts and outline our vision for the future of aerospace transportation. The primary focus of the talk will be on the technical aspects of external propulsion in which all or a part of the energy required for launch is coming from a ground-based array of microwave antennas configured to beam microwave energy to the vehicle. In the talk I will explain the key benefits of using external beamed energy to power aerospace vehicles, discuss challenges of wireless energy transfer, and summarize opportunities created by external propulsion. The talk will also focus on Escape Dynamics’ work in wireless energy transfer and high power microwave systems. Specifically, I will focus on the engineering aspects of a 92.4GHz, 100kW CW gyrotron designed and built by our team and on the power beaming experiments performed in our lab. Finally, I will briefly describe operation of microwave powered engines including thermal thrusters in which microwaves are absorbed into heat, and plasma thrusters in which microwaves are used to heat plasma.
