Researchers correlate incidences of rheumatoid arthritis and giant cell arteritis with solar cycles

What began as a chat between husband and wife has evolved into an intriguing scientific discovery. The results, published in May in BMJ (formerly British Medical Journal) Open, show a “highly significant” correlation between periodic solar storms and incidences of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and giant cell arteritis (GCA), two potentially debilitating autoimmune diseases.

COLLOQUIUM: The Electrical System of the Heart

The electrical system of the heart is uniquely designed to promote organization and prevent disorder. Despite this, many people suffer from arrhythmias. Atrial fibrillation affects almost 5 million Americans and sudden cardiac death, in part caused by ventricular arrhythmias, is the leading cause of mortality in industrialized nations. We will discuss the electrical system of the heart, how it can be thwarted to produce arrhythmias and the field of cardiac electrophysiology, which is the study and treatment of arrhythmias.

COLLOQUIUM: In Silico Plasmas Under Extreme Intensities

Intense laser and particle beams can be focused down to intensities in excess of 10^23 W/cm^2. Similar intensities are also present in extreme astrophysical scenarios. Under these conditions, the interaction of these intense beams and fields with plasmas is very rich, permeated by collective processes, relativistic nonlinearities and strong field physics. The complexity of these scenarios can only be grasped resorting to large scale numerical simulations.  Advanced multi-scale models combined with massively parallel high performance computing are driving new discoveries.

COLLOQUIUM: Efforts in New Jersey to Prepare for a Changing Climate

As a densely populated, highly urbanized coastal state, New Jersey is especially vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate. An innovative network of organizations, facilitated by Rutgers University, has been spearheading efforts to build capacity at the state, local and community levels to prepare for and adapt to the conditions of a changing climate in the Garden State.

COLLOQUIUM: A Wild Solution for Climate Change

The impacts of climate change on biodiversity and nature is increasingly prevalent. Projected ahead climate change has increasingly greater impacts beyond what the Climate Convention refers to as allowing systems to adapt naturally.

The presentation will examine the two degree target for climate change and what biological systems can contribute toward reducing (mitigating) climate change.

Nat Fisch Wins Europe's Alfvén Prize

The European Physical Society (EPS) has named physicist Nat Fisch winner of the 2015 Hannes Alfvén Prize. Fisch, director of the Princeton Program in Plasma Physics and professor and associate chair of astrophysical sciences at Princeton University, will receive the honor in June at the at the annual meeting of the EPS Division of Plasma Physics in Lisbon, Portugal.
