Optional:  Trip to the  Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is sponsoring a bus trip to the Laboratory on Friday, January 25.  The bus will leave Trump Plaza at 12:45 pm and will return to Trump Plaza at approximately 7:00 pm.  The tour at PPPL will include a visit to the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) and, if activities permit, to the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR).  NSTX is PPPL’s newest experimental device. It achieved its first plasma on February 12, 1999.  Its performance has been very good;  NSTX has  attained a  plasma current exceeding 1 MA almost 2 years ahead of its projected experimental program schedule. If possible, visitors will be given a first-hand look at the final phase of the TFTR Decontamination and Decommissioning Operations. Diamond Wire cutting technology is currently being used to segment the concrete filled vacuum vessel. The D&D  program began in October, 1999 and is projected to be finished by September, 2002.   Information on these programs can be found at the web sites below.   Please be sure to check the box for the PPPL Tour on the SOFE registration form if you would like to join the tour.
