The invention is a compact device to prevent oxidation and/or contamination of an experimental sample. To avoid chemical reactions samples are prepared in a glove box with a chemically inert argon atmosphere with oxygen and nitrogen levels reduces to below 1 ppm. For examples, samples that need to be transferred to the ultra-high vacuum of a surface analysis instrument, such as a scanning auger microscope without exposure to air, usually involves automated handling in special portable vacuum chambers or special environments purged with argon. The present invention eliminates the need by using a cm-scale transfer device that allow the sample to be transferred to the preparation chamber in a more efficient manner without any exposure to air.
