Regional Science Bowl to be Held Saturday
at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory

Twenty-eight High School Teams to Participate

Plainsboro, New Jersey — More than 100 of the area's youngest scientists and engineers will show what they know Saturday, February 24, at the U.S. Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL).

Twenty–eight teams from 18 area schools are scheduled to compete in the New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Competition of the National Science Bowl® at PPPL. This is the fifteenth year the Laboratory is hosting the Jeopardy!-like tournament in which all the categories are disciplines of science. Beginning at 9:30 A.M., competing teams will be quizzed on biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science, general science, and mathematics. Each team is made up of four students, a student alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. Many Science Bowl participants have gone on to careers in scientific fields.

"I've been coordinating the high school Science Bowls at PPPL for the past 10 years and continue to be amazed by the dedication and knowledge of the students who participate and the adults who coach them. The teams are made up of excellent students who go through intense preparation before the bowls," said PPPL Science Bowl Coordinator James Morgan. "During the finals, the volunteers often stick around to see how the teams fare. The competition can be as exciting — and tense — to watch as a sporting event."

PPPL hosts one of 68 regional competitions, all of which are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The top winners of the regional competitions receive all-expense paid trips to the National Science Bowl® scheduled for April 26–30 in Washington, D.C.

Participating schools in the double-elimination tournament at PPPL this year are:

Christian Brothers Academy (Lincroft, N.J.)
Council Rock High School-North (Newtown, Penn.)
East Brunswick High School (East Brunswick, N.J.)
High Technology High School (Lincroft, N.J.)
Highland Park High School (Highland Park, N.J.)
Hopewell Valley Central High School (Pennington, N.J.)

PPPL, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and managed by Princeton University, is a collaborative national center for science and innovation leading to an attractive fusion energy source. Fusion is the process that powers the sun and the stars. In the interior of stars, matter is converted into energy by the fusion, or joining, of the nuclei of light atoms to form heavier elements.

Representatives of the media are invited to attend the Regional Science Bowl at PPPL. The Laboratory is on Princeton University's Forrestal Campus off U.S. Route 1 in Plainsboro, and not on the University's main campus in Princeton.

Directions to PPPL are on the web at: http://www.pppl.gov/about_pppl/pages/driving_instr_pppl.html.
A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport, is required for admittance to PPPL.
