PLEASE NOTE THURSDAY DATE - COLLOQUIUM: Professor Ralph Roskies - "Big Data at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center"
I will review the history of large data challenges and achievements at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. Recently these have exploited three unique systems- Blacklight, with the world’s largest coherent shared memory system: ANTON, a special purpose molecular dynamics engine that outperforms much larger systems; and Sherlock, a novel graph-analytics system. Data handling has been empowered by the new Data Supercell, developed at PSC, which greatly outperforms traditional storage systems, at lower or comparable cost.
I will illustrate how these technologies have enabled researchers to tackle problems in anatomy, neural systems, tornado modeling, cosmology, and natural language processing.
