TO BE RESCHEDULED - COLLOQUIUM: Antibiotic Resistance: A Global Challenge

Dr. Ramanan Laxminarayan
Princeton University - Princeton Environmental Institute
Much of modern medicine (including surgeries, transplants and cancer treatments) depends on the availability of safe, effective antibiotics to keep infections at bay.  Antibiotics are losing effectiveness worldwide and we face the threat of increasing rates of infections, particularly in parts of the world where infection control and public health remain weak.  Thinking about antibiotic effectiveness as a natural resource, much like oil, is useful in guiding our thinking on how best to balance between conserving the effectiveness we have and innovation to find new sources of effectiveness.
