PPPL'S DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT, SAFETY AND HEALTH

It is the policy of Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory that health and safety of the public, PPPL personnel and on-site subcontractors, the preservation of the environment, and the protection of Laboratory property receive the highest consideration in all our work. Achieving excellence in this regard is facilitated through a comprehensive set of Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) directives that focus on the various activities undertaken at the Laboratory.


About PPPL ES&H

Over the years, our ES&H programs have achieved excellent results. This is because they are an integral part of our culture — embodied in everything that we do. Our Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) provides a clear framework for incorporating safety and environmental considerations into the management and performance of all Laboratory work activities. It strongly reinforces our policy that the responsibility for environment, safety and health resides with each individual and every line manager.

We are committed to the principles, functions, and controls described in the ISMS and we will continually apply the principles of integrated safety and environmental management as we fulfill our responsibilities and commitments to each other, the University, DOE, and the public.

 


U.S. - Japan Safety Monitoring Joint Working Group

In early 1992, there was an unfortunate event of concern in the US when a visiting Japanese researcher was overcome by leaking nitrogen coolant gas. After this near-miss event, discussions were held between the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) about conducting safety walkthroughs of fusion research facilities and experiments in each country. As a result, the US-Japan Bilateral Agreement on Fusion Research, in part, established the Joint Working Group (JWG) on Fusion Safety. The activities of the JWG at magnetic and laser fusion experiments provides for an excellent exchange of information and perspective resulting in increased attention toward personnel safety with specific attention to visiting collaborators at the national institutes and universities of both countries.
