The 2014 ALPHA Immersion Workshop

The Science Education Department started the summer with a workshop geared towards college physics instructors interested in incorporating plasma physics experiments in their classrooms.  The Alpha Immersion workshop (http://www.advlab.org/immersions.html) was a 3 day event that introduced the attendees to all aspects of a specific experiment:  the theoretical framework, the experimental setup, the data analysis and even possible spinoff experiments.  Andrew Zwicker, Arturo Dominguez and Professor Jeremiah Williams (Wittenberg University) led the workshop which included experiments in plasma spectroscopy, Paschen’s law of plasma breakdown and the use of Langmuir probes to measure plasma parameters.  There were 5 participants from all over the country (and 2 from Mexico).
