Education

  • Science Education
    Welcome to the Science Education Department at PPPL, where we combine the core research activities of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) with science education programs to create a center of excellence for students, teachers and the general public. We contribute to the training of the next generation of scientists and engineers, collaborate with K-12 teachers on ways to improve science teaching using an inquiry-based approach to learning, and improve the science literacy of the community at large.
  • Outreach Efforts
    Excitement about plasmas and fusion comes alive when members of PPPL go out into the community or invite the public inside to sample the world of fusion research. The Laboratory has a variety of portable and at-home scientific demonstrations, laboratories and experiments that explain the beauty and wonder of science, fusion, and plasmas. The Laboratory hosts Open Houses and exhibits at local, regional, and national events such as Communiversity and the American Physical Society’s Plasma Sciences Expo.
  • Graduate Programs
    PPPL supports graduate education primarily through the Program in Plasma Physics in the Department of Astrophysical Sciences of Princeton University. Students are admitted directly to the Program and are granted degrees through the Department of Astrophysical Sciences. In addition, through the interdepartmental Program in Plasma Science and Technology, PPPL supports students in affiliated engineering and science departments, who pursue research in plasma physics, while satisfying requirements and receiving degrees in their home departments.
  • Off Site University Research (OSUR)
    The PPPL Off Site University Research (OSUR) Program provides ‘scientific outreach’ to a broad range of US colleges and universities in various areas of plasma and fusion science. These areas include plasma theory and simulation, plasma experiments, plasma diagnostics, undergraduate plasma education, engineering support, and safety. This support is provided to approximately 25 university and college groups and our goal is to impact as many projects as possible within the academic community.
