Morning Workshop
This is the Morning Workshop. There will be three presentations of this workshop based on grade level -- Middle School, Advanced Middle School/High School, and High School for Advanced Science Teachers.

Title: APS/DPP TD101: Introduction to Fusion Energy and Plasma Sciences

Description: Fusion energy is as old as the universe, yet scientists and engineers have been working to achieve fusion on earth during just the past 50 years. Small-scale fusion on earth has been achieved and is routine in many of today's experimental devices in the US, Europe, and Japan. However, there is still a long way to go to develop fusion energy as a commercially available source of energy.

This workshop will introduce you to plasma science as a stepping stone to understanding fusion energy research. You will use standard science concepts culled from atomic structure, gas laws, electricity, and Einstein's famous equation, E=mc2, to explore this rich and fascinating world of fusion science. Demonstrations and giveaways will enable you to bring the excitement of plasma and fusion science into your classroom!

Afternoon Session
On the Registration Form, please choose one of the following themes for your Afternoon Session:
  • Theme 1: Student inquiry into the nature of light and other radiation.
    Recommended for Middle School Teachers.

This workshop will reinforce concepts learned earlier in Fusion Energy and Plasma Sciences and will show engaging techniques for strengthening students' understanding of practical electromagnetic phenomena that happens daily in their lives.

  • Theme 2: Using multimedia to make plasma science come ALIVE in the classroom.
Recommended for Advanced Middle School and High School Teachers.

This workshop will challenge teachers to prepare a short Power Point presentation on some topic from plasma science or fusion energy. Resource materials will be (a) CD-based, covering the sun and fusion reactors; (b) poster-based, covering fusion; (c) paper-based, covering activities in plasma science, radiation, and the like; and (d) videotape, covering progress in fusion science and technology. No prior experience in Power Point is necessary. This is a fun and engaging workshop that will prepare you to do the same with your students!

  • Theme 3: Fusion demonstration activities for the classroom. Recommended for High School Teachers teaching advanced science.

This workshop will introduce you to techniques to stimulate your students to learn more about plasma and fusion sciences. Participants will explore tabletop "fusion," emission spectra from a fluorescent light, and the meaning of voltage and current in plasma. Participants should have a basic understanding of nuclear science, electricity, and the origin of electromagnetic radiation.
