Science Teachers Day -- Introduction

Dear Science Teachers:

indentThe broad goal of the American Physical Society-Division of Plasma Physics Education and Outreach Committee is to provide middle and high school teachers with up-to-date information about physics research, a better understanding about the working life of a research physicist, and knowledge about new approaches in inquiry-centered learning.

indentScience Teachers Day begins at 7:30 A.M. on Tuesday, October 28th. Advance registration is required.

indentThe understanding and use of plasmas is entering into a Golden Age. Profound new insights into the behavior of solar and stellar phenomenon, exciting advances in fusion energy research and development, and the technological applications of plasmas will play an increasing role in 21st century science and research. The world your students are growing into will greatly benefit from plasma-related technologies and new discoveries in the basic behavior of plasmas.

indentSo what is a plasma and what do plasma physicists do?

indentAlthough most students can name three states of matter (solid, liquid, gas), relatively few know that a fourth state -- the plasma state -- exists and that it makes up almost all of the visible universe. Lightning, neon and fluorescent lights, and the aurora borealis are all examples of a plasma -- an ionized gas with unique behavior. Plasma physicists study the behavior of plasmas.

indentHow are plasmas used?

indentPlasmas are used in research, such as fusion energy research and space science research, and industrial applications such as semiconductor and materials plasma processing, the etching of computer chips, industrial coatings, and environmental remediation.

indentAt Science Teachers Day 2003, we will tell you about recent developments in the field of plasma physics and how this knowledge is being used in space science and energy research, including the worldwide effort to develop fusion energy -- one of the great challenges in science and technology today.

indentOur presentations are designed especially for middle and high school science teachers and include handouts and resource materials to be taken back and used in the classroom. Our content-rich presentations follow national science standards and our unique cache of demonstrations bring excitement to the workshops. All are easily adapted to the classroom. There will be opportunities to interact and learn first-hand from researchers.

indentWe hope to see you on October 28 at Science Teachers Day 2003 at the Hyatt Regency, 330 Tijeras, NM 87102.
